Lazy Chic Guide to Earn Money during College
I hear quite often from friends who said they wish they can go overseas and pursue their further degree..but the only problem is there is not enough money.
I remember when I decided to go to overseas to continue my further degree. I had very limited savings, courtesy from my sister who had just started work. Was is hard? Yes, there are many times i wonder if I can pay the tuition fees or if I have enough money to eat the next day.
But my desire to study and get my degree is much bigger than my obstacles lack of money. So here I am going to give you a guide on how to earn some part time income during your college time.
I have use some of these ideas and I graduated from my degrees on my own without much monetary support from family except initial pocket money from my sister.
Here are some ideas on how to earn money during college time without missing your class:
Get A Temp Job.
Depend on the country that you go, and what is their policy for overseas student. The country that I went allowed international student to work maximum 20 hours a week.
I didn’t know what part time job to apply at that time, but when I browse through the news paper. Look at your strength. I can type really fast even without looking at the keyboard. So I decided to apply data entry job.
I got the job after typing test and interview. And it paid pretty well for a student than being a waitress. The job is not that tough, and as a temp I will only take the assignment on the day when I am available. So check local classifieds, or student job search for vacancies.
It does provide a pretty steady flow of income and another big advantage is the experience can enable you to gain valuable work experience.
A lot of my friends find this job during college time. Its pretty hard physically as you need to stand for a prolong period of time. And you might have to work until late night. I didn’t get this job though even though I have knocked to so many restaurant doors.
Become a Tutor
I did it too during my college time. I taught primary school students. If you love interacting with children and teaching is something enjoyable for you. Then tutoring income is quite lucrative for college student. I had 5 students at that time, and the experience influenced me so much that I decided to pursue career as a trainer and lecturer after I graduated.
I know a friend who likes to clean so much, that he did part time cleaning service when he was a student. After he graduated from his master degree, he decides to open cleaning service for offices and service apartment. The company was so successful that he decided to do this business full time and hire many students as his temp staff.
If you like to clean, you could help clean houses. You could even join forces with some friends and tackle larger projects. Who knows you might end up with big cleaning service company like my friend.
Become an Uber or Lyft Driver
All you need is a car and some spare time. Just sign up with Uber or Lyft and start driving people around. You’ll make what you put into it.
Sell your last semester book
Don’t just rely on your college bookstore to sell your last semester textbook. I sold my textbook by joining new class forum. They are more than happy to purchase your textbook. Even if its not brand new and with a lot of highlighter to emphasized main point. One of my buyers told me the highlighters even help him to learn.
Sell unused books, electronics, fashion, CDs, DVD, or anything you like to sell. My brother would get movie theme Tshirt (e.g. Batman) and sell it. Particularly if he know certain theme movie will launch soon. He will purchase the tshirt in bulk and sell the t-shirt when the movie launch. Smart move hey? He does earn quite a bit pocket money from this hustle.
Make your skills/hobbies works for you.
Sell stock photos. Perhaps taking pictures is your forte. If you are a great photographer, you could possibly sell your photos online. Sites like iStockPhoto are always looking for contributors, who get paid a royalty every time their photo is purchased. This could be a great way to turn your art into some extra cash.
Do you have any digital media skills, design or making website? Go to Fivver or Freelancer to advertise your service.
Do you like art and craft, making jewelry? How about selling it at Etsy?
Baby-sitting is another great side income. Especially if you have neighbour or relatives with young children. It’s classic money making for college student and for good reason. You get paid (well) to watch TV and not very much else! It really is easy money (unless you get stuck with the child from hell!).
Do you enjoy fast food or going into retail shops? Many companies hire mystery shoppers to test the customer service of their stores. I know a friend who always looking out for mystery shopper for her research company. Companies such as Starbuck, Subway have big budget on this. If you have time and can travel to different places, this could be a good side hustle.
Renting Out A Room
If you have a spare room in your house, you could make some extra money by renting it out. You have to advertise, screen tenants, and collect rent, but the small amount of time involved could be lucrative.
A friend of mine actually rent the 3 bedroom apartment and sublet 2 others room to share the cost. But be careful with the landlord policy if you rent the apartment yourself.
There is really tons of ways to make extra money even if you are still a college students. So please, no more excuse about this.
